Ernst H. Gombrich.
Freud and the Psychology of Art: Style, Form, and Structure in the Light of Psychoanalysis.
Little Einaudi Library n.96
Volume in excellent condition.
Ernst H. Gombrich has always cultivated a deep interest in the methodology of art history that has led him to investigate the most current techniques of experimental psychology, visual perception and information. In the three essays that make up this book (reprinted in the «Piccola Biblioteca Einaudi. Nuova serie after eleven editions that appeared from 1967 to today in the Nuovo Politecnico and in the «Pbe»), Gombrich addresses another problem of psychology already in the face of artistic facts: Freudian psychology. While the stereotypical image that has been made of Freud's thought wants the ideal work of art to be explained through the content that unconscious thought determines by disturbing the artist, Gombrich demonstrates how Freud reaches completely opposite conclusions: only the Unconscious ideas that can be adapted to the reality of formal structures become communicable. Hence the possibility of giving a precise expressive meaning to style, form, structure. The unconscious determines language, the work of art can be examined at all levels as a system of significant structures, where unconscious life brings us back to the most vivid moments of contemporary epistemology.
