Paul Arnold.
The Mayan Book of the Dead.
Mediterranean Editions, 1992
Paul Arnold among the "Americanist" scholars has noted how similar the Mayan language was to that of the Chinese. Following this intuition, and through the comparison between the ancient Chinese hieroglyphics and the Mayan signs consisting mostly of ideograms, he was able to decipher this writing and interpret one of the very few documents that have come down to us.
This religious manuscript, preserved at the National Library of Paris, is a unique testimony of Mayan metaphysical thought, absolutely superior to the religions of other Mesoamerican populations.
Neither the original Chinese script nor the classical Mayan script are purely pictographic, but resort to an often very elaborate symbolism.
