The twelve chapters that make up this volume touch on a varied group of topics. The one that gives the title to the volume, for example, actually deals with gigantic prehistoric animals that still live, probably the only survivors, on the island of Komodo, a few kilometers from Bali. These distant heirs of carnivorous dinosaurs, of extraordinary strength, very skilled at escaping capture, represent "the last dragons", all the taboos and all the problems that still elude a thorough investigation by man, both because of an innate and perhaps unconscious sense of repulsion, and because of an ancestral terror that they still inspire in human beings. These are the themes that Watson addresses, with the intent of rationally clarifying still obscure and mysterious aspects of life on earth.
